Grilled Hula Pork Skewers 🌴 For a Meal or Small Plates
Have you ever been to an island in the South Pacific? I went to Hawaii once when I was only 11 years old—long before cooking or preparing meals ever entered my realm. But I remember pieces of that trip so vividly. The island made such a lasting impression on me and I’ve always wanted to get back. These Grilled Hula Pork Skewers give me a little taste of Hawaii without the travel time.
Not long ago, I mentioned my Hawaii trip as the inspiration for the Guava Mimosa. I remember drinking guava juice every morning at breakfast, and how unique it tasted compared to anything I’d ever had. That’s island fare for ya. These flavors are the best elements from Asia combined with a natural sweetness from the fruits of nature and the simple, primitive feel of cooking outdoors with flames.
[One day, I plan to have a real outdoor kitchen. For now, the grill and smoker will do.]
I’ve got a few more skewer recipes in development as well. Skewers embody my ideal of a quick and easy dinner. Most of the prep work (what little exists) can be done way ahead of time, making mealtime a cinch. Two years ago, it would have been in the wee hours of the morning before heading to my full time job. And when it’s time for dinner, just pull the skewers out of the refrigerator and throw them on a hot grill. There’s no better strategy for time crunch or brain melt—two issues I still seem to struggle with even as a stay-at-home-mom. Maybe more so as a SAHM. I used to think ditching the full time gig would make life so much easier. LOL! There are tradeoffs, but easier is not one of them. So I’ll keep the skewer recipes coming!
The other reason I love skewer recipes is their flexibility for use as a small plates party dish. I’d just throw the ingredients on cute little 6″ skewers instead of the full size ones. Perfect for a small taste, and this recipe would make enough to share a skewer with up to 8 people as a small plate.
